Welcoming Jörg Wenzel to ImmunoSensation

We are delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Jörg Wenzel from the Center for Skin Diseases at the University Hospital Bonn to the Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation2. Jörg Wenzel is a dermatologist and physician-scientist with extensive expertise in inflammatory skin diseases and cutaneous immunology.

Research Focus: Understanding Skin Immunity and Inflammation

Jörg Wenzel’s research focuses on immune-mediated skin diseases, such as cutaneous lupus erythematosus and psoriasis, with a particular emphasis on the role of innate immune responses. His work has contributed significantly to unraveling the molecular mechanisms behind chronic inflammation and autoimmune reactions in the skin, paving the way for targeted therapeutic strategies.

In addition, he investigates the interaction between skin-resident immune cells and epithelial barriers, aiming to better understand the pathogenesis of inflammatory dermatoses. His research integrates immunohistology, molecular pathology, transcriptomics, and advanced imaging techniques to explore how immune dysregulation contributes to disease progression.

Collaborations within the Cluster

With his expertise in dermatological immunology, dermatopathology and chronic inflammation, Jörg Wenzel’s research perfectly complements the scientific efforts of ImmunoSensation2 to decode immune responses across different organ systems. His work aligns with research on innate immune signaling, interferon-driven inflammation, and tissue-specific immune responses, making collaborations with experts in inflammation, immune regulation, and metabolic immunology particularly promising.

By integrating dermatological research with systemic immunology, Jörg Wenzel aims to foster interdisciplinary collaborations within the Cluster, contributing to a deeper understanding of how immune dysregulation in the skin can impact overall immune homeostasis. His laboratory already operates the Histology Platform which provides histopatholigical analysis services to Cluster members.

Looking Ahead

In the future, Jörg Wenzel envisions leveraging the unique collaborative and interdisciplinary environment of ImmunoSensation2 to uncover novel therapeutic targets for immune-mediated skin diseases. His research will focus on translating immunological insights into new treatment approaches that improve patient care.

"I am thrilled to join ImmunoSensation2 and collaborate with outstanding immunologists to further explore the intricate connections between skin immunity and systemic inflammation," says Jörg Wenzel. "By combining dermatological expertise with innovative immunological research, we can develop innovative strategies to treat chronic inflammatory skin diseases more effectively."

We look forward to the exciting new perspectives and collaborations that Jörg Wenzel will bring to ImmunoSensation2 and are excited to support his research within the Cluster.
