Welcoming Valentin Sebastian Schäfer to ImmunoSensation

The Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation2 is delighted to welcome Prof. Dr. Valentin Sebastian Schäfer as its newest member. Valentin Schäfer is a distinguished physician-scientist based at the University Hospital Bonn, where he serves as the head of the Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at the Clinic of Internal Medicine III.

Research Focus: Advanced Imaging and Decoding Immune Dysregulation in Inflammatory Rheumatic Diseases

The research of Valentin Schäfer is focused around understanding the mechanisms of immune dysregulation in inflammatory diseases, with a particular focus on inflammatory rheumatic conditions. His work combines clinical expertise with advanced (molecular) imaging methods and comprehensive immunological analyses to explore how the immune system's balance is disrupted in diseases such rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, myositis and vasculitis.

Through cutting-edge techniques, including single-cell RNA sequencing, high-dimensional flow cytometry, and advanced imaging techniques, Valentin Schäfer aims to identify novel biomarkers for disease progression and treatment response. His team and collaborators are also investigating innovative therapeutic strategies, such as targeting immune signalling pathways and modulating T and B cell activity to restore immune homeostasis.

Collaborations within the Cluster

Joining the Cluster of Excellence ImmunoSensation2 presents exciting opportunities for Valentin Schäfer to collaborate with the diverse network of immunologists, biologists, and computational scientists the Cluster has to offer. His research aligns seamlessly with the Cluster's mission to uncover the function of the immune system in health and disease.

Looking Ahead

Valentin Schäfer is enthusiastic about contributing to the Cluster's vibrant research community. He sees his role as not only advancing the understanding of inflammatory rheumatic diseases but also fostering inter- and transdisciplinary approaches to tackle complex challenges in immunology and rheumatology.

"I am thrilled to join ImmunoSensation2 and look forward to collaborating with this outstanding group of scientists. By bridging the gap between the clinical challenges in rheumatology and cutting-edge immunological research, we can push the boundaries of innovation and bring new hope to patients with immune-related diseases.," Valentin Schäfer shared.

The ImmunoSensation2 Team warmly welcomes Valentin Schäfer and looks forward to the impactful contributions he will bring to the Cluster's scientific endeavors.
