Entry requirements
The consecutive master course of studies "Medical Immunosciences and Infection" is directed at applicants with a completed qualifying degree from a German or foreign university in the fields of (Molecular) Biomedicine, Biochemistry, Immunology, Chemistry, Biology, Human Biology or in a related field.
The degree must have been completed with the mark 2.3 or better according to the german grading system (In the german grading system 1 is the best grade and 4 the minimum to pass). In the application, the grade should be stated as it appears on the Bachelor's certificate, with additional information about best grade that can be achieved and the minimum to pass.
Please note that for China, Vietnam and India a APS certificate is required for the application and subsequent admission. Applications cannot be considered without the certificate.
Concerning the qualifying degree program, proof must be brought of medical or life science competence equivalent to the standard of the bachelor Molecular Biomedicine (Bsc). The prerequisite courses include:
- Either Immunology, Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Anatomy or Physiology with a total of at least 30 CPs, as well as
- Either Chemistry, Genetics, Developmental Biology, Molecular
Biology, Cell Biology or Microbiology with a total of at least 30 CPs - additionally: The final thesis of the first professionally qualifying degree must be experimental practical work; for degrees that do not include a final thesis in the curriculum, proof of scientific-practical laboratory experience of at least 15 ECTS-LP must be provided (One ECTS point equals 30 hours).
English language proficiency at a minimum of the B2 level according to the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (GeR) is necessary and must be proven via an approved language test (e.g. TOEFL, IELTS) or an equivalent document.
Each winter term 20 students can join the program. If the number of applications exceeds the capacity, applicants who meet the admission requirements will be invited to the selection process. In the first round, applicants take a placement test and in the second round they are invited to an online interview. In 2024, we received more than 700 applications, which is why a selection process was initiated.
Support program - ImMens
Immunology Mentoring Study Program
As additional support for outstanding students within the University of Excellence, we are able to offer some student assistant positions to members of our program each year. The students will be employed for 2 years in one of the research groups at University Hospital Bonn and can gain additional practical experience during their studies. The students can choose the laboratory according to their interests. Two tutors from our program will support them as mentors. They will support the students in choosing an appropriate laboratory as well as during their studies.
Places are allocated to interested students on the basis of their bachelor's grade, the recruitment interview and a study-specific test.
The program is ending in 2024.
How to apply

For the application you have to upload, your Bachelor's certificate /or current transcript of records, prove of english language proficiency (minimum level B2), a brief overview of your professional training and practical research experience (CV like) and if applicable a short description of your current research experience.
If you have gained extracurricular practical research experience, please add a proof (job reference, letter from supervisor) to your application.

Curriculum
The Master's course "Medical Immunosciences and Infection" aims to immerse students in the fields of translational immunology and infectious diseases.
Current concepts of immunology and infectious disease research will be discussed in literature seminars and directly applied to their research projects. Elective compulsory modules allow students to set their individual research priorities.
After finishing this course, students will be equipped with all the essential skills needed for independent academic work and a successful research career.

Our student council consists of a group of students from our study program, representing all students’ needs and wishes concerning their studies. FAQ
I have not yet received my final transcripts. Can I apply?
Applications are welcome even if the required degree has not been awarded by the time of appliciation, as long as this will be conferred before courses start in October.
I hava a Bachelor in Biotechnology. Can I apply for the program?
In most cases, bachelor's degree programs on biotechnology do not include enough courses from the required fields of study. Have a look at the entry requirements.
Do I need to pass an English language test?
If your German "Abitur" certificate indicates English proficiency level B2, you don't have to take an additional test like TOEFL or IELTS.
I studied medicine. Can I apply?
Yes. You will meet the admission requirements if you have passed the 2nd state examination and gained some additional practical research experience. If you have gained extracurricular practical experience, please submit a proof like a job reference, letter from supervisor when you apply.
How many students will be admitted?
20 Students will be admitted each year.
When can I apply for the upcoming winter semester?
Applications can be submitted form January onwards until the 31st of March. Please use the online portal that is provided by the University of Bonn. We can not accept applications by E-Mail.
Where can I find more information about applying for a visa or what kind of support the university provides for international students?
Please visit the website of the International Office of the University of Bonn.
Where can I register for a student dorm?
The student dorms are administered by the “Studentenwerk Bonn”. Please apply before the following deadline. For the winter semester this is August 10th.
Do I need to submit a APS certificate?
If you did your bachelor in Vietnam, India or China you need a APS certificate to get a visa and to register at the university in Germany. Please make sure you request a APS certificate when you start your application, it can take up to three months to get the certificate.
